The worst Windows XP dialog ever

Since going Mac in October 2006 my encyclopedic knowledge of horrible Windows dialogs is getting rusty. Lucky me, almost every time I have to deal with a Windows XP machine I also see the worst dialog ever:

“ALERT: You just inserted a disk of some sort with files of some kind, would you like to… [annoying [...]

Most important pop culture influences from 2 to 10 years old

Superman I & II
Alien
The Z Channel
Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back
The Twilight Zone. I’m told that I used to watch this at all hours before I could even talk. Great.
Old school Warner Bros. cartoons, especially those featuring Wagner, Bugs conducting the symphony, Duck Twacy, Bugs in the Coliseum, or that creepy red monster [...]

Lessons learned from Digg-style traffic spikes

Two days ago, thanks to someone submitting this post to YCombinator News nathanbowers.com went from ~65 unique visitors a day to 558. Of course you usually need several spikes like that before the traffic sticks. Pageviews are good, but subscribers and commenters are what really matter.

Long story short, either 1) mute your Mac before rebooting, 2) hold down the mute [...]

The one lesson that Web and PDF designers still need to learn

Print matters!
This means:

Never ever use white text on dark backgrounds in PDFs. Do you think people are made of toner?
Always use a print-specific Cascading Style Sheet on your website. If you won’t do that then at least make sure your regular CSS only applies to screen display and let the browser apply default styles when [...]

Complaining is worse than useless

The next time you’re whining about something ask yourself:

Am I problem solving or just venting?
Will venting fix the problem?
Does the person I’m complaining to really want to hear this?

Venting and seeking sympathy makes you worse off because instead of fixing the problem you end up feeling good enough to not take the action you need [...]

Great moments in spaceship design: Sark vs. Sulaco

I hadn’t watched Tron in years, but in a recent viewing I noticed that Sark’s Carrier…

…looks just like the Sulaco from Aliens.

Both were designed by Syd Mead.
For more futurism, check out this Flickr set of Mead’s paintings.
Hopefully this post spawns a productive discussion about which ship would win in a fight.
