Gene Steinberg went to Hostican:

http://blog.hostican.com/index.php?s=dreamhost

NearlyFreeSpeech.net seems good: less over-sold; pay for what you use.

I've also heard good things about slicehost for real "all the way" do-it-yourselfers.

Dreamhost is a 21st century Ponzi scheme. They buy Green and Democratic certifications instead of host ratings... Their latest front-page pop-up gimmick:

"Salesbot 4000, the robot in charge of creating promotional DreamHost coupons for new customers, has run amok. He's created a new unauthorized promotional code - 105321 - that we've been unable to deactivate..."

Ha! I've used both of your WTF candidates -- and loved them both. Both for dedicated boxes.

I, too, have heard great things about Media Temple, and that $20 entry point is very attractive, but I've also heard (read) the same issues that you've heard.

LS,

Dreamhost has worked fine for a long time, but lately it's just a lot slower, especially when I'm writing, saving posts, and uploading WP images. I'm also getting intermittent hangs. This blog is my "brand" so I need better service.

This WP theme is based on Sandbox but I've modified it for easy customization and for printability. Eventually I'm going to release it as a free template so watch this space.

I'm a big dreamhost fan. Value for money is pretty unparalleled, especially since I couldn't care less about a bit of downtime.

Note that I do not use their email, otherwise I might care more.

BTW, what wordpress template are you using? It's quite clean and lovely.

Hi Bret, thanks for commenting.

A traceroute and ping to your servers says that there are 27 hops with an average ping of 100ms for me. I think the problem is that none of your static site files are cached so on every page load my browser makes about 50 http requests.

Check out my <a href="http://nathanbowers.com/technology/how-to-speed-up-your-wordpress-blog-and-make-it-digg-resistant-even-if-youre-on-a-cheap-shared-host/" rel="nofollow">guide to site caching</a> for a fix.

"Liquid Web: They look nice, and I’ve read good reviews, but their site is unbelievably slow, like, 15 seconds per page slow. Does not bode well for a web host."

Hi Nathan, I understand your concern with our main page being slow because we do have it loading a video on the bottom etc.

Below are a few download tests so you can test out the speed from your connection to our servers.

I'd be more then happy to work with you directly so fee free to shoot me an e-mail or give me a call for a quote.

So many business opportunities, so little time.

Policing forums is pure hell, so I probably wouldn't do it. If only there was a way to build a profitable user generated content site without all those pesky users.

<em>We need a site that lists hosting companies from crummy shared hosts to expensive dedicated servers. There should be editorial ratings, user ratings, and a well moderated forum</em>

Um...hello? Business opportunity!

I'm still on DH. Yeah, it's sucky, but it's less sucky than it used to be, and the sucky you know is better than the sucky you don't.

Please post findings! Maybe...on a site that lists hosting companies from crummy--

Oh, never mind...
