How not to color your links

I’m giving Google Analytics a try. So far it’s really slick, but there’s an annoying yet easy to fix UI problem. Can you spot it in this screenshot?

Google Analytics snafu

If you guessed that the “Add website profile” link is invisible, you’ve won a shiny set of steak knives.

I spent maybe 30 seconds looking for the link they were talking about in the explanatory text next to the light bulb. The “Add” link is barely visible and this is just a tiny excerpt of the whole page.

The fix is to make the “+ Add Website Profile” much more “buttony” or clickable. Also that medium gray just has to go, any link of any color will get lost in a neutral field like that.

Finally, and this is for everyone building web apps, if you’re going to spit a bunch of explanatory text at me, at least make it actionable. Why an “Add profile” link wasn’t in that text I’ll never know.

You are not alone. It took me forever to find that too and, oddly, I think I had clicked it before. It took me even longer because I ended up trying to find it under My Account and ended up trailing links from there.

    F-, Google.
