Be sure to see Murakami at the Geffen MOCA before it closes on February 11th. Here’s a Flickr set, though the pictures don’t do the work justice and they don’t show the really impressive large scale stuff. (Side note: You know what would be sweet? A 40 foot tall Veritech sculpture.)
I hate it when photography is forbidden in museums. Yeah, yeah, copyright, but seriously, any fuzzy non-flash snaps I take are no substitute for the artwork (or more likely, the $70 companion book). People are probably taking the photos to promote the show in their blog anyway, so cut us all a break. LACMA goons almost threw me out of the Magritte show because I took a picture of the main room (the design of which was more interesting than most of Magritte’s work… I love the guy, but his painting style is FLAT and for me paint texture is the thing. Oddly, Murakami’s paintings are superflat, but they work because the subjects have a lot of graphic texture. BTW, I can get carried away with parenthetical asides).
