Recent encounters with superficial software design: Wordpress 2.5 and H&R Block TaxCut

This Saturday I had a cold so instead of going to my friend’s epic birthday party I stayed home, experimented with Wordpress 2.5, did my taxes, and watched 3 episodes of Download: The True Story of the Internet.

Wordpress’ new admin interface is MUCH better than the old admin interface, but one little non-functional detail was particularly cool:

It’s great when software is straight with you. It minimizes frustration and reduces duplicate feature requests.

As a wild-eyed techno-crypto-anarcho-capitalist libertarian (and independent consultant) doing taxes gets on my last nerve. H&R Block’s web based tax software eases the pain by holding my hand and asking all the right questions. One form however, was a bit confusing:

Hmm… is the answer 42? Oh, my bad, browser was too narrow.

When I finished, Friendly Stock Art Lady was there to give me the warm fuzzies:

Look, I just got reamed by the Federal Government. Do you think meaningless stock art will make me feel better?

Note to all designers: stock art sucks because it’s generic. Instead of a smiling business person (what, no pic of a handshake?), show me something even more cheerful like an infographic of misappropriated tax revenues from 1901–2007.
