Alex, We need data portability for sure. Sometimes we also need data security, which is contrary to "the cloud's" interests. If everyone sent encrypted Gmails then Gmail would have nothing to index and no relevant ads to show. Of course, people always give up security for convenience, so it's not worth worrying about.

This is very true and rather unsettling when written out like this. I think initiatives like http://dataportability.org/ will help a great deal. But we are not anywhere near a solution.

I am also sold on gmail as my primary and only email interface, however I have configured a client to download each and every email via pop so it is also stored locally and covered by my own backup regiment. So I am only 95% and the mercy of web apps :)

Very well written, and actually it’s amazing how far we’ve come from Hotmail to today’s Gmail.

In the spirit of April the 1st, I think this is worth watching. Again.(as you’ve probably seen it) ;)
