YouTube’s painfully missing functionality

Ready?

It’s the power to link directly to a specific point in a video.

The GoogleVideo team has already implemented this in a clunky way; I wonder why YouTube doesn’t have it yet. Google could derive value from indexing all the “interesting” starting points, and YouTube users would get to feel much more powerful.

Timecode linking* is sorely lacking in all media players. Lately I’ve been wanting to link to the good parts of podcasts but I don’t know how. Ad-supported podcasts may balk at this idea for obvious reasons, but since money is on the table I’m sure they’ll figure out some sort of interstitial ad.

* I can’t think of a better name for this, someone help me out.
